AfriNIC encourages to participation to IPv6 World Launch

AfriNIC (the African Network Information Centre) is collaborating with the Internet Society to promote and encourage participation to the World IPv6 Launch initiative to be held on 6 June 2012. Major Internet service providers (ISPs), mobile operators, home networking equipment manufacturers, and web companies around the world are coming together to permanently enable IPv6 for their products and services.

AfriNIC, the Regional Internet Registry for Africa has been actively spreading IPv6 best experiences, trainings and know how over the past six years. Through participating in this event, AfriNIC reaffirms its commitment to IPv6 adoption in the region.

"With IPv4 exhaustion approaching, it is important that Internet services in Africa are accessible over both IPv4 and IPv6.  At the same time, ISPs will have to consider providing production grade IPv6 connectivity.  This is the only way to ensure a consistent user experience once the wider World reaches IPv4 exhaustion. Operational experience and measurements on World IPv6 Launch will help ISPs to identify and rectify any potential problems regarding the delivery of services over IPv6." explains Adiel Akplogan, CEO, AfriNIC.

AfriNIC, the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) for Africa, responsible for the distribution and management of Internet number resources throughout the African region highlights this as a key date for the future growth of the Internet.

Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4), on which the Internet has been running for more than 30 years now is reaching its design limits mainly with the depletion of number resources associated with it, known as Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. This is essentially due to the rapid growth of the Internet during the past few years.
